SilverRectangle

My artistic intuition is very precise or this is amazing good fortune.

I started a computer graphics project using columns. I spaced them intuitively so they looked nice. No measurement. No theory. Then I decided to space them using some classical or architectural method.

A frequently used concept in art is the golden ratio. It comes from mathematics and is seen frequently in nature. Applied well it produces pleasant proportions. Greek and Roman architecture uses it extensively. In its simplest form it is a rectangle of proportions approximately 1 : 1.618.

The golden ratio is everywhere so I decided to use the silver rectangle. Its proportions are about 1 : 1.414. I made such a rectangle, scaled it to the height of a column, and placed it between columns. The goal to use it as a guide to move the columns into place so that the height is 1.414 times the distance between the bases.

I was surprised to see that my intuitive spacing of columns was already precisely the silver ratio!
